Owner dependency
Why the company stalls the moment you step away, and how to move decisions off your plate without dropping them.
A podcast from ForgePoint Consulting · Hosted by Elijah and Leslie Langhorne
Build a business that doesn't need you for everything.
A practical podcast for owner-operators who are busy, growing, and tired of being the operating system. Real conversations on leadership, business math, and structure, from two hosts who have built businesses of their own.
Nobody starts a company to become its bottleneck. But somewhere between the first truck and the fifth employee, every decision starts routing back through one phone. Revenue climbs. Margin doesn't. The vacation gets pushed again.
That isn't a work-ethic problem. It's a structure problem, a math problem, and usually a leadership problem. All three can be learned.
ForgePoint Leadership Lab is where we work through them. No hype and no hacks. Just the questions, numbers, and decisions that change how a company actually runs. Every episode should leave you with a sharper question, a clearer decision, or one thing to do this week.
Episode 1 · with Leslie Langhorne · Leadership Identity
What if the things that helped you build your business are now the things holding it back?
Elijah and Leslie Langhorne open the show with the stories that shaped how they see business, leadership, and faith. Elijah built a contracting company past half a million in revenue and found more trucks didn't mean more freedom. Together they unpack the hardest shift an owner makes: changing who you believe you have to be.
You'll leave with: a clear read on which of your strengths has quietly become your ceiling, and why the next step takes community, not just another strategy.
Six things every owner eventually has to get right.
Why the company stalls the moment you step away, and how to move decisions off your plate without dropping them.
Pricing, margin, cash flow, average ticket, and repeat business. The numbers that show where the money actually goes. Math is the path.
The shift from technician to owner to leader. Accountability, culture, and making good calls under pressure.
Repeatable processes, a steady operating rhythm, and practical tools, AI included, so the business stops running on your memory.
What actually changes behavior. Turning a good idea into a habit, a system, and a result you can measure.
How integrity, service, and responsibility shape the way you lead. Offered honestly and never forced. You don't need to share the faith to get something from the conversation.
Founder, ForgePoint Consulting · Co-host
Elijah Langhorne is the founder of ForgePoint Consulting and co-host of ForgePoint Leadership Lab. He built Langhorne Electrical & Contracting and still owns it, served nine years in U.S. Air Force Security Forces with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and holds an MBA. Today he helps owners of service businesses build companies that run on structure instead of on the owner's constant presence.
Owner, Rooted Designs · Co-host
Leslie Langhorne runs Rooted Designs, her own creative business, and co-hosts ForgePoint Leadership Lab. Before building her business, she spent 15 years as an educator, and she now uses those teaching strengths to make sure ForgePoint's material is clearly structured and grounded in proven principles. On the show, she guides the discussion and guest conversations so every idea lands for the listener.
Elijah Langhorne knows what it feels like to be the hardest-working person in your own company.
He built Langhorne Electrical & Contracting, a residential and commercial electrical and contracting business, and lived the full weight of ownership: payroll, pricing, field crews, customer expectations, and a phone that never stopped. He grew it past $500,000 in revenue in under 18 months, including a 275% revenue jump in less than nine months, and learned that more revenue, trucks, and work didn't automatically mean more freedom or profit. He still owns the company. He no longer runs it day to day, which is the point. Learning to build a business that operates without the owner in every decision is the lesson at the center of this show.
Before business, Elijah served nine years in U.S. Air Force Security Forces, with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The military taught him discipline, accountability, and how to make decisions under pressure. Ownership taught him how much of that has to be translated before it works in a small company.
He founded ForgePoint Consulting to help owner-operated service businesses grow profit, build structure, and develop leaders. He holds an MBA, is a doctoral candidate in business administration at Capella University, where he also teaches MBA supply chain management, and is a FRAP-certified consultant.
Faith shapes how he thinks about responsibility, service, and leadership. He's also writing a memoir, Sawdust & Scars.
He and his wife, Leslie, co-host ForgePoint Leadership Lab for owners who want substance over slogans and the honest conversations most business podcasts skip.
Leslie Langhorne is a business owner first. She runs Rooted Designs, a creative business built on artistry and vision, and knows firsthand the fear, comparison, and courage that come with building something of your own.
She came to entrepreneurship by way of the classroom. Leslie grew up in an entrepreneurial family, chose the stability of teaching, and spent 15 years educating and mentoring students before stepping back into business. Those teaching strengths didn't stay in the classroom. At ForgePoint, she makes sure what gets taught is well structured, grounded in established principles, and easy for a busy owner to absorb and use. A good framework only helps if people can actually learn it.
Her leadership also runs through the church. She served as a department director during the formative years of Antioch Central Houston, a church plant that continues to grow, and she still supports its ministry today. She also helps facilitate the Faith & Business Roundtables, live gatherings where owners talk honestly about leading with conviction.
Leslie co-hosts ForgePoint Leadership Lab with her husband, Elijah, and helps lead the show's discussions and guest conversations. She guides each conversation the way a good teacher runs a room, drawing out what's really getting in the way and making sure the lesson is clear enough to put to work.
In the classroom, the church, her business, and behind the microphone, her focus stays the same: helping people grow, find their purpose, and make a meaningful impact.
